Ulster Works offers workshops for job seekers on a variety of topics to assist you with your job search. New workshops are offered periodically, so check often for updates. Look over the descriptions of our current workshop offerings, and see which ones might enhance your job search.
Workshop participants must register at the OneStop. Pre-registration is required for all workshops.

RESUME PREPARATION WORKSHOP
Your facilitator will discuss the various types of resumes and provide an overview of what you should and should not include in your resume. Examples of different types of resumes will be provided.
Resume dos and don’ts, purpose of having a resume and cover letter, and SMART 2010 Program.
ONLINE RESUME WORKSHOP
Learn how to create a resume that will generate better job leads from online seraches using computer technologies: SMART, O*Net, and other online tools. The best way to obtain successful hits from online sources is to have the appropriate keywords and skills in your resume. Laptop computers will be provided.
Basic typing & computer skills needed. Come with a rough draft of your job history and/or accomplishments. If possible, organize into sections:education, employment/volunteer work, activities,
JOB SEARCH WORKSHOP
Helpful tips for how to tap into the job market. Facilitator will lead a discussion covering: tips on how to conduct a robust job search including networking, tapping into the unseen job market, and identifying transferrable skills.
THE VETERAN JOB SEARCH WORKSHOP
Review labor market information, job search assistance and Veteran specific information.
The primary purpose of this workshop is to provide the following information to veterans: skills assessments, interest surveys, resume preparation, civil service, interviewing, career guidance, job search assistance, transferrable skills assessment, veteran friendly websites, training and high demand jobs in the local community. Veteran specific information also covered: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Traumatic brain injury (TBI), Federal and State VA benefits, etc.
SETTING UP AN EMAIL ACCOUNT, CONDUCTING AN EFFECTIVE ONLINE JOB SEARCH AND COMPLETING ONLINE APPLICATIONS
How to set up an email account, how to search for jobs online, and the basics of completing on-line job applications.
MOCK INTERVIEWING
Interviewing for a job is all about first impressions. Potential employers look at how you carry yourself, your body language, and how well you handle face-to-face job interactions. Experts agree that practicing before going to an interview is a must. In this workshop, the facilitator will be asking (and answering) standard interview questions, critiquing you and offering suggestions on how to improve. The workshop will also include an overview of interview strategies and tips on how to reduce your anxiety. All participants are to feel free to speak out and share thoughts and questions.
GOVERNMENT EMPLOYMENT WORKSHOP
Receive insight into potential opportunities and benefits of Civil Service employment. In this workshop you will be taught what Civil Service jobs are, how to fill out Civil Service applications, the Civil Service testing process, and where to find Civil Service jobs.
WHEN THE MONEY GETS TIGHT
The facilitator will introduce you to www.mybenefits.ny.gov, provide information about different government services (HEAP, Medicaid, etc.) and what documents you need to apply for these services. You will also receive information on non-governmental assistance available in Ulster County.
GREEN TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
Are you considering changing fields to work in a “Green Career?” Find out about education and training available in the local area that you might need in order to work in some green and sustainable careers.
INTERVIEWING TECHNIQUES
Learn how to prepare and research for interviews, and address perceived barriers.
COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND EMPLOYMENT OPTIONS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES
Discuss the Americans with Disability Act, Social Security Administration, RCAL, Gateway Community Industries, Section 55b/c of NYS Civil Service Law and the Disability Employment Websites.
USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN YOUR JOB SEARCH
The key to getting a job is getting in touch with a decision-maker. There are many social networks, blogs, discussion groups, and websites for job seekers to gain professional contacts, with three of the largest being LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Learn the basics of these social networking applications and how they can be used in your job search-- what they offer, how to set up an account, and how to use them to help you find your next job.
